A workshop for the writer in all of us! After an introduction to Focusing, participants will be introduced to Experiential Journaling, a method of written reflection that has proven to be an effective tool for problem solving, personal growth, and breaking blocks to action. On the way to learning this process, we will also take time to practice an inspirational method for making the first step in writing a poem. Finally, we will apply the new knowledge of Experiential Journaling specifically to the breaking of writer’s block, with the intention of giving participants a genuine step forward in their work.
DAVID SMITH, M.Ed. is a published author and longtime experiential educator. An avid writer, he was nevertheless an unenthusiastic journaler until the practice of Focusing led him to discover Experiential Journaling. The results were so powerful in opening insight and encouraging forward movement that he now offers workshops at which participants are often moved by profound self-discovery.
“The body knows” is a foundational principle of both Authentic Movement and Focusing. Come explore how these two modalities, both rooted in psychology, can be used in tandem to support you in accessing wisdom that you can use in daily life to understand, work with, creatively develop/resolve or heal life issues. The workshop will guide participants through basic concepts of mover/focuser and witness/companion and sample each modality before trying out a new ‘dance’ integrating one with the other. No previous knowledge or physical capabilities are prerequisites. Come as you are. Please bring a journal and wear comfortable clothes for moving.
ROBERTA WHITNEY, M.A. completed two-year training in Authentic Movement with Daphne Lowell and Alton Wasson in 2006. She continues occasional studies with them and Joan Webb. Roberta has been studying Focusing since 2003 and recently completed certification as a Focusing Trainer. Formerly a teacher and librarian, Roberta has transitioned in the past decade to work that engenders healing, well-being and growth in individuals. In addition to Focusing and Authentic Movement, Roberta is a certified yoga teacher, Enneagram coach, and energy healer
Most of us reflexively dwell on our problems and concerns. However, there is convincing recent research that by placing attention on positive experiences and positive feelings (such as gratitude and enjoyment), we can think more effectively and expansively. In addition, attending to the positive in one’s life has been shown to cultivate psychological resilience. People who have a higher ratio of "positivity" to “negativity” have more energy and better health. In this workshop, we will explore how Focusing can be used to enhance and deepen “positivity.” We will reflect on the three types of experiences that constitute happiness. We will conclude by evoking our personal signature strengths and exploring ways to apply those strengths to the challenges we face.
JOAN KLAGSBRUN, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist who has been in the practice of psychotherapy for over 30 years. She has been teaching Focusing internationally for 3 decades. In her work at the interface of psychology and spirituality, she has found Focusing to be an effective practice for eliciting positive emotions, as well as for working through blocks and problems. Joan has a private psychotherapy practice in Watertown. She teaches Focusing locally to psychotherapists, health care providers, graduate students, and the public.
In this workshop, you will learn how to work with your dreams using Focusing, a body-oriented process for self-discovery and insight. Drawing on the work of Eugene Gendlin, author of Focusing and Let your Body Interpret your Dreams, we will show you how to access your body’s wisdom as a guide to the living meaning of your dreams. You will learn tools to help you connect with your dreams more deeply, receive their gifts, and facilitate their unfolding into your life. Participants are encouraged to bring a dream in order to practice the skills being taught.
