Most of us reflexively dwell on our problems and concerns. However, there is convincing recent research that by placing attention on positive experiences and positive feelings (such as gratitude and enjoyment), we can think more effectively and expansively. In addition, attending to the positive in one’s life has been shown to cultivate psychological resilience. People who have a higher ratio of "positivity" to “negativity” have more energy and better health. In this workshop, we will explore how Focusing can be used to enhance and deepen “positivity.” We will reflect on the three types of experiences that constitute happiness. We will conclude by evoking our personal signature strengths and exploring ways to apply those strengths to the challenges we face.
JOAN KLAGSBRUN, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist who has been in the practice of psychotherapy for over 30 years. She has been teaching Focusing internationally for 3 decades. In her work at the interface of psychology and spirituality, she has found Focusing to be an effective practice for eliciting positive emotions, as well as for working through blocks and problems. Joan has a private psychotherapy practice in Watertown. She teaches Focusing locally to psychotherapists, health care providers, graduate students, and the public.
Facilitated by Joan Klagsbrun, PhD.

Focusing, developed by Eugene Gendlin, is a mind/body/spirit process for accessing the body’s innate wisdom and cultivating compassion towards oneself and others.
Focusing is useful for decision-making, clarifying life issues, moving past blocks, enhancing creativity, deepening spirituality, and knowing oneself more deeply in each moment.
This monthly drop-in group provides an opportunity for both those new to Focusing, and experienced Focusers, to practice within a supportive community. Newcomers will have an opportunity to be taught the Focusing process. A voluntary donation of $8 helps cover the rent.
All meetings are at The Arlington Center, on Sundays from 2-4 PM, and are open to both experienced Focusers, and those with no previous Focusing experience.
